Sep 28 - St Wenceslaus (907-929) martyr

Summary: St Wenceslaus, Martyr. Born about 907 in Bohemia (Czech Republic); died there about 929. Raised a christian by his grandmother, ruled Bohemia with christian principles, worked for the education of his people, and sought harmony with neighbouring Germanic peoples. Opposition to these policies led to his murder at the hands of his brother's followers. Honoured as the earliest Slav saint for his selflessness in promoting the Christian faith.

Patrick Duffy looks for some of the facts about the young king.

The outstanding memory of St Wenceslaus in culture is his unselfishness; A popular cult arose proclaiming the affable and learned prince Wenceslas as the perpetual spiritual ruler of all Czechs. He looked out for the poor man on the feast of Stephen!

Early life
In Czech, Svaty Vaclav, he was raised as a Christian by his grandmother, St Ludmilla, but his ambitious mother Dragomir, a pagan, had her murdered and acted herself as regent until Wenceslaus came of age in 924. Court intrigue and the desire of the people to put an end to conflict between Christian and non-Christian factions in Bohemia pushed him to taking the reins of government himself.

Assertively Christian
As duke of Bohemia, Wenceslaus was pious and encouraged German missionary priests in evengelising Bohemia. But he antagonised his non-Christian opponents. Faced with German invasions in 929, Wenceslaus submitted to the German king, Henry I the Fowler.

Assassination
His submission provoked some of the nobles to conspire against him and they prompted his younger brother Boleslaus to murder him. Boleslaus invited Wencenslaus to a celebration of the feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian and as Wenceslaus was entering the church, Boleslaus struck him on the head with a sword. They struggled, and then friends of Boleslaus finished off the assassination. But frightened at the news of miracles occurring at Wenceslaus's tomb, Boleslaus had his remains transferred to the Church of St Vitus in Prague. This became a great pilgrimage centre during the medieval period. By the year 984 the feast of St Wenceslaus was being observed.

Influence
I
mmediately after his assassination, Wenceslaus was regarded as Bohemia's patron saint. The 19th century Christmas carol, Good King Wenceslaus, sings his virtues of generosity to the poor. Written by J.M. Neale (d.1866), the incident it depicts is an imaginary one.

Along with St Stanislaus, he is co-patron of the Wavel Cathedral in Cracow.

FIRST READING

A reading from the book of Zechariah       8:20-23
Theme: Many people will come to seek the Lord in Jerusalem.

The Lord of Hosts says this.
'There will be other peoples yet, and citizens of great cities.
And the inhabitants of one city will go to the next and say,
"Come, let us go and entreat the favour of the Lord,
and seek the Lord of Hosts; I am going myself"
And many peoples and great nations will come to seek the Lord of Hosts in Jerusalem and to entreat the favour of the Lord.'

The Lord of Hosts says this.
In those days, ten men of nations of every language will take a Jew by the sleeve and say,  "We want to go with you, since we have learnt that God is with you." '

The Word of the Lord            Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL

The Lord be with you.                  And with your spirit
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke    9:51-56          Glory to you, O Lord.
Theme: Jesus resolutely too the road for Jerusalem

Wrangler Light Gray Outdoor Performance Relaxed Fit at Knee FlexAs the time drew near for him to be taken up to heaven, he resolutely took the road for Jerusalem and sent messengers ahead of him. These set out, and they went into a Samaritan village to make preparations for him, but the people would not receive him because he was making for Jerusalem.

Seeing this, the disciples James and John said,
'Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to burn them up?'
But he turned and rebuked them, and they went off to another village.

The Gospel of the Lord.          Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Gospel Reflection     Tuesday,        Twenty Sixth Week in Ordinary Time      Luke 9:51-56

When our good intentions, our worthwhile initiatives, meet with indifference or even hostility from others, it can be very discouraging and we can be tempted to lash out verbally in response. In that sense, the reaction of the disciples in today’s gospel reading is very human. As Jesus headed south from Galilee to Jerusalem, he sent his disciples into a Samaritan village to prepare the way for him. However, the Samaritans would not receive this Jew heading for Jerusalem. The disciples lash out verbally, asking Jesus if they should beseech God to destroy this village. However, Jesus did not appreciate his disciples’ angry outburst and rebuked them. Instead, he accepted the Samaritans’ rejection of him and went on to another village. Jesus was not prepared to add to the animosity between Jews and Samaritans by responding to the Samaritans as they had to him. In Luke’s second volume, the Acts of the Apostles, the risen Lord would again reach out to the Samaritans, this time through the preaching and ministry of Philip. On this occasion, the Samaritans respond enthusiastically to Jesus and his gospel. Jesus was prepared to wait on people; he did not take an initial rejection as their last word.

Jesus is prepared to wait on us all. He keeps seeking us out in his love, even when our first or even second response to him is less than promising. He also looks to us to wait on each other, rather than returning insult for insult, injury for injury, as the disciples wanted to do. Jesus shows us that how people relate to us need not determine how we relate to them. Rather, we are called to relate to others as the Lord relates to us.

Scripture Theme
Marriage is not a human option but a divine creation.
Jesus' prohibition of divorce is one of the most widely attested sayings in the tradition.

FIRST READING

A reading from the Book of Genesis         2:18-24
Theme: They become one body.

The Lord God said,

'It is not good that the man should be alone. I will make him a helpmate.'

So from the soil the Lord fashioned all the wild beasts and all the birds of heaven. These he brought to the man to see what he would call them; each one was to bear the name the man would give it. The man gave names to all the cattle. all the birds of heaven and all the wild beasts. But no helpmate suitable for man was found for him. So the Lord God made the man fall into a deep sleep. And while he slept, he took one of his ribs and enclosed it in flesh. The Lord God built the rib he had taken from the man into a  woman, and brought her to the man.
The man exclaimed:
'This at last is bone from my bones
and flesh from my flesh!
This is to be called woman,
for this was taken from man.'
This is why a man leaves his father and mother and joins himself to his wife, and they become one body.

The Word of the Lord            Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm         Ps 127
Response                             May the Lord bless us all the days of our life.

1. O blessed are those who fear the Lord
and walk in his ways!
by the labour of your hands you shall eat.
You will be happy and prosper.                Response

2 .Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
in the heart of your house;
your children like shoots of the olive,
around your table.                                       Response

3.  Indeed thus shall be blessed
the man who fears the Lord.
May the Lord bless you from Zion
in a happy Jerusalem
all the days of your life!
May you see your children's children.
On Israel, peace!                                          Response

SECOND READING

A reading from the letter to the Hebrews       2:9-11
Theme: The one who sanctifies, and the ones who are sanctified, are of the same stock.

We see in Jesus one who was for a short while made lower than the angels and is now crowned with glory and splendour because he submitted to death; by God's grace he had to experience death for all mankind.

As it was his purpose to bring a great many of his sons into glory, it was appropriate that God, for whom everything exists and through whom everything exists, should make perfect, through suffering, the leader who would take them to their salvation. For the one who sanctifies, and the ones who are sanctified, are of the same stock that is why he openly calls them brothers.

The Word of the Lord.     Thanks be to God.

Gospel  Acclamation        Jn 17: 17
Alleluia, alleluia!
Your word is truth, O Lord, consecrate us in the truth.
Alleluia!

or                                               1Jn 4:12
Alleluia, alleluia!
As long as we love one another God will live in us and his love will be complete in us.
Alleluia!

GOSPEL

The Lord be with you.          And with your spirit
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark     10:2-16       Glory to you, O Lord.
Theme: What God has united, man must not divide.

Some Pharisees approached Jesus and asked,
'Is it against the law for a man to divorce his wife?' They were testing him.
He answered them,
'What did Moses command you?'
'Moses allowed us' they said 'to draw up a writ of dismissal and so to divorce.'
Then Jesus said to them,
'It was because you were so unteachable that he wrote this commandment for you. But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female. This is why a man must leave father and mother, and the two become one body. They are no longer two, therefore, but one body. So then, what God has united, man must not divide.' Back in the house the disciples questioned him again about this, and he said to them, 'The man who divorces his wife and marries another is guilty of adultery against her. And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another she is guilty of adultery too.'

People were bringing little children to him, for him to touch them. The disciples turned them away, but when Jesus saw this he was indignant and said to them,
'Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. I tell you solemnly, anyone who does not welcome the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.' Then he put his arms round them, laid his hands on them and gave them his blessings.

The Gospel of the Lord.           Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Back in the house the disciples questioned him again about this, and he said to them, 'The man who divorces his wife and marries another is guilty of adultery against her. And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another she is guilty of adultery too.'

CÉAD LÉACHT
Sliocht as an Leabhar Geineasas       2:18-24
Déanann aon fheoil amháin díobh.

Agus dúirt an Tiarna Dia:
“Ní maith é an duine a bheith leis féin. Déanfaidh mé céile cúnta a dhiongbhála dó.”
Chum an Tiarna Dia dá bhrí sin as an talamh ainmhithe an mhachaire go léir, éanlaith an aeir go léir, agus thug sé i láthair an duine iad féachaint cen t-ainm a thabharfadh sé orthu: cibé ainm a thabharfadh an duine ar gach dúil bheo, sin é a bheadh mar ainm air. Thug an duine ainm ar an eallach go léir, ar éanlaith an aeir go léir, agus ar na hainmhithe allta. Ach ní bhfuarthas céile cúnta a dhiongbhála don duine. Chuir an Tiarna Dia suan trom ar an duine, agus, ina shuan dó, bhain sé easna as agus chuir feoil ina timpeall. An easna a bhain an Tiarna Dia as an duine, rinne sé bean aisti, agus thug chun an duine í.
Dúirt an duine ansin:
“Is cnámh de mo chnámha-sa í seo ar deireadh,
Agus is feoil de m’fheoilse í.
Tabharfar bean (ís-seá) uirthi
Mar gur baineadh as an bhfear (ís) í.”
Uime sin, fágann an fear a athair agus a mháthair agus cloíonn sé lena bhean, agus déanann aon fheoil amháin díobh.

DARA LÉACHT

Sliocht as an  Litir chuig na Eabhraig         2:9-11
Óir is d’aon bhunadh amháin an té a naomhaíonn agus na daoine a naomhaítear.

A bhráithre, is é rud a fheicfimid, áfach, ná Íosa – an té a rinneadh níba ísle ná na haingil ar feadh tamaillín i ngeall ar an mbás a d’fhulaing sé – agus é faoi choróin ghlóire agus onóra; mar (is trí ghrásta Dé a) d’fhulaing sé an bás ar mhaithe le cách. Ag seoladh mórán mac chun na glóire dó ba chuí don Té, ar dó agus ar tríd atá an uile ní ann, a gceannródaí ar bhóthar an tslánaithe a thabhairt chun foirfeachta le peannaidí. Óir is d’aon bhunadh amháin an té a naomhaíonn agus na daoine a naomhaítear. Ar an ábhar sin ní náir leis bráithre a thabhairt orthu.

Briathar an Tiarna                 Buíochas le Dia

Alleluia Véarsa                   Eo 17: 17
Alleluia, alleluia!
Is fírinne do bhriathar A Thiarna,
déan sinn a naomhú san fhírinne.
Alleluia!

SOISCÉAL

Go raibh an Tiarna libh.            Agus le do spiorad féin
Sliocht as an Soiscéal naofa de réir Naomh Marcas          10:2-16      Glóir duit, a Thiarna.
An ní a cheangail Dia, ná scaoileadh duine é.

San am sin tháinig Fairisínigh chuige agus d’fhiafraigh siad de, ag baint trialach as: “An dleathach do dhuine a bhean a scaoileadh uaidh?”
D’fhreagair sé agus dúirt leo: “Cad a d’ordaigh Maois daoibh?”
Dúirt siadsan: “Thug Maois cead litir idirscartha a scríobh agus í a scaoileadh.”

Dúirt Íosa leo:
“Is de dheasca bhur gcroí a bheith stuacach a scríobh sé an aithne sin daoibh. Ach ó thús an chruthaithe ‘rinne Dia iad fireann agus baineann; mar gheall air sin fágfaidh duine a athair agus a mháthair chun bheith go dlúth i bpáirt lena bhean, agus aon cholainn amháin a bheidh sa bheirt acu’. Dá réir sin, ní beirt iad feasta ach aon cholainn amháin. Dá bhrí sin, an ní a cheangail Dia, ná scaoileadh duine é.” Cheistigh a dheisceabail é mar gheall air seo arís sa teach, agus dúirt sé leo: “Duine ar bith a scaoileann uaidh a bhean agus a phósann bean eile, déanann sé adhaltranas ina coinne. Agus má scaoileann bean a fear uaithi agus fear eile a phósadh, déanann sí adhaltranas.”

Agus bhí siad ag tabhairt na leanaí chuige chun go sínfeadh sé a lámh orthu, ach bhí na deisceabail ag cur ceartú orthu. Ar a fheiceáil sin dó, tháinig míchéadfa air agus dúirt leo:
“Ligigí do na leanaí teacht chugam; na coiscigí iad, óir is lena leithéidí seo ríocht Dé. Deirim libh go fírinneach, cibé nach nglacfaidh ríocht Dé ar nós linbh, ní rachaidh sé isteach inti choíche.”
Agus rug sé barróg orthu, chuir a lámha orthu, agus bheannaigh iad.

Machtnamh ar Bhriathar Dé dia Domhnaigh

An pósadh a choimeád beo

Tá an phósadh bunaithe ar gáanna daonna bunúsacha, agus tá sé luachmhar fós i dtréimhse athraithe sóisialta. Taispeánann na teaghlaigh a d'fhan aontaithe thar na blianta gur féidir le grá maireachtáil in aghaidh na stoirmeacha a eiríonn ó am go ham fiú ins na caidrimh is fearr agus is láidre. Is deacair é an éagobhsaíocht a bhaineann le saol an teaghlaigh inniu, agus is brónach an méid scaradh pósta a thiteann amach. Ag an am céanna, mar a dúirt ár bPápa Proinnsias go soiléir, ní mór don Eaglais trócaire agus tuisgint a theaspáint do dhaoine atá i gcomhpháirtíocht nua tar éis an chéad pósadh a bheith bhriste, ar chúis ar bith. Ní féidir fadhbanna na clainne a réiteamh le briathra nó searmanais, is cuma cé chomh maith é. Mar sin, tá gníomhaireachtaí san Eaglais chun cuidiú le lánúineacha ullmhú le haghaidh a bpósadh, agus níos déanaí cabhrú leo dul i ngleic leis na coimhlintaí a bhíonn ag bhagairt a mbuanseasmhacht.
